Writing is the one NAPLAN domain that most practice platforms struggle with. Multiple choice questions are easy to auto-mark. But writing? That requires someone to read the response and give meaningful feedback. That's why most free platforms skip writing entirely, and paid platforms charge extra for it.
Brightstar solves this with AI-powered writing feedback — completely free.
How It Works
Step 1: Choose a prompt. Pick from 15-19 NAPLAN-style writing prompts. Each prompt is modelled on real NAPLAN writing tasks — either narrative (write a story) or persuasive (argue a point). Year 3 prompts are simpler and more concrete. Year 5 prompts are more complex and nuanced.
Step 2: Write your response. A full writing area with word count and an optional 40-minute timer — just like real NAPLAN. Your child writes directly in the browser.
Step 3: Get AI feedback. Within 10-15 seconds, your child receives a detailed report card scoring their writing against the 10 official NAPLAN writing criteria:
- Audience — Does the writing engage the reader?
- Text Structure — Clear beginning, middle, end?
- Ideas — Are ideas relevant and developed?
- Character & Setting — (Narrative) Established effectively?
- Vocabulary — Varied, precise, interesting word choice?
- Cohesion — Do sentences and paragraphs connect logically?
- Paragraphing — Used appropriately?
- Sentence Structure — Variety of sentence types?
- Punctuation — Correct use of full stops, commas, speech marks?
- Spelling — Accuracy?
Each criterion receives a star rating (1-5), specific praise quoting something done well, and one actionable improvement tip. The feedback also includes an overall NAPLAN band estimate and "next steps" suggestions.
Why AI Feedback Works for Children
Traditional writing feedback is slow — a teacher or parent reads the work, writes comments, and returns it days later. By then, the child has forgotten what they wrote and why.
AI feedback is immediate. Your child writes, gets feedback in seconds, and can revise and resubmit right away. This rapid feedback loop is how skills improve fastest. The feedback is also consistently encouraging and specific — it always finds something to praise before suggesting improvements.
Is It Accurate?
The AI is calibrated against the official NAPLAN marking rubric published by ACARA. It won't match a trained human marker perfectly, but it provides genuinely useful, criterion-specific feedback that helps children understand what good writing looks like and how to improve. For home practice, it's far more useful than no feedback at all — which is what most families have.
